Product overview

In 1800, Governor Philip Gidley King issued a proclamation to address New South Wales' currency crisis. By 1812, Governor Lachlan Macquarie imported 40,000 Spanish Pillar Dollars and counter-stamped them, creating the Holey Dollar (outer ring) and Dump (centre plug). Australia's first coins were born.

This Perth Mint tribute re-creates the historic Pillar Dollar (peso or 'piece of eight'). It features the 'VTRAQUE' inscription ('both are one'), the Spanish Crown, Old and New World hemispheres, and the Pillars of Hercules with spiralling 'PLVS VLTRA' banners, which are said to have inspired the '$' symbol.

Includes a protective capsule, a display case, an outer shipper box, and a numbered Certificate of Authenticity. Ready for your collection or gifting.
