About the Royal Australian Mint
Have you ever wondered where the coins in your purse come from? The ANZAC $2, the Indigenous flag $1, and special anniversary coins all have their own stories. The Royal Australian Mint in Canberra has been the place where that magic begins since it opened on 22 February 1965, just in time for Australia to move to decimal currency.
It's a fascinating part of our history that adds a little extra meaning to every coin we carry.
Prince Philip cut the ribbon, transforming the Mint from just a coin factory to a symbol of Australian identity. It ended dependence on overseas production and began creating coins from everyday currency to collectors' treasures. Now, it houses the National Coin Collection and continues making pieces that reflect Australia's history, nature, and milestones.
